Annie Sloan Chalk Paint® LACQUER- Polyacrylic Top Coat

Product Description
Maximum quantity available reached.

Chalk Paint® Lacquer

Chalk Paint® Lacquer is a hard-wearing, water-based polyacrylic topcoat with built-in UV protection. Use it over Chalk Paint® for a robust finish that will withstand general wear and tear – perfect for dining room tables, outdoor furniture, floors and more. It goes on perfectly clear, it is is quick drying, non-toxic, low odor, and non-yellowing. The lacquer will give you a very durable scuff resistant finish.

We recommend applying Lacquer with an Annie Sloan FLAT BRUSH.

Two Finish Options

This polyacrylic Lacquer is available in two finishes: Matt and Gloss.

Matte Lacquer provides a flat matte finish and will slightly darken the color of the Chalk Paint®, as does Chalk Paint® Wax.

Gloss Lacquer gives a light sheen but is not ultra glossy. It is more like a Satin/Semi-Gloss.

Size & Technical Information

One tin of polyacrylic Lacquer contains 750 millilitres or 25.36 ounces. It will cover an area of approximately 204ft²

Application Information

Using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint Lacquer is NOT like using or applying Chalk Paint. It is strongly recommended that you download and read the Annie Sloan Lacquer Fact Sheet for full application instructions before purchasing and starting your project.

We recommend applying Lacquer with the Annie Sloan Flat Brush for a smooth finish.

Tips from Our Experts

Holly & Jan - Owners of Vintage Arts and Annie Sloan Experts shares their tips to help you get the best results and a robust finish.

Note: We recommend completing these steps on a test area before completing all over a piece or kitchen as #10 can present and cause you to begin all over again.

1. Mix your Lacquer!  DO NOT SHAKE as this will introduce bubbles that will carry over onto your piece. Flip your lacquer container upside down and let it sit like that for a few hours.  Use a paint stick to mix all the way to the bottom to mix in the flattening agents. Flattening agents can appear a bit sludge-like.  Mix periodically when using to ensure agents stay well mixed.

2.  Use a flat brush by Annie Sloan to apply lacquer.  Do not use a sponge roller or chalk paint brush as they will introduce bubbles into your finish.

3. Always apply lacquer in thin coats.  If applied heavy and thick, clouding will result.

4. Two THIN coats are recommended for the best coverage and protection. Again - it is best to apply two thin coats rather than one thicker one.

5. Apply paint strokes in one directionConfident strokes in one direction for an even finish is extremely important because the lacquer does not like to be back brushed or overworked.

6. MOST IMPORTANT: Do NOT overwork the lacquer when applying. If you overwork the lacquer it can reactivate the paint and cause it to mix with the lacquer (flashing). The result is a highly uneven (mottled) finish that you will be very unhappy with.

7. Moisture and humidity can cause "flashing" - a white hazy result.  We recommend using the product at room temperature and low humidity.  If it is high humidity, consider waiting until it passes before application.

8. Do not rush the drying process. It can take 1 to 2 hours for one coat to dry. BUT if it is humid, has been rainy or damp - this will make drying time longer before another coat can be applied. We recommend letting it sit overnight before applying a second coat.

9. Let it cure before putting anything heavy on your lacquered surface. Lacquer is a very strong and durable product but this finish needs enough time to cure (water-based products typically need 14 – 28 days to cure).  Until then it is soft and it is possible to damage it.

10. Bleed through can happen over certain species of wood when sealing with Annie Sloan Lacquer, particularly pine and oak.  Lacquer is a strong penetrating top coat that “drills down” through the paint layers, giving the finish a lot of strength, but it can also pull out the tannins as it dries. If bleed through presents after applying lacquer, you must seal the piece with an oil-based shellac or Killz (oil based).  Unfortunately you must then repaint with Chalk Paint and then lacquer. It’s the only way to correct this situation.

11. Clean up is easy. Wash brushes thoroughly with water and soap (we love Dawn). Rinse thoroughly.

If you experience any of the aforementioned issues or any other, reread the instructions and Annie Sloan's Fact Sheet to see if you can trouble shoot. Reach out to us if you need assistance. 904-600-4ART.
